use f(x) = x f(1) = 1 [ as 1<=x<=5 ]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you walk us through that so I can see how you arrive at the answer?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

This function is defined in two different ways depending on the value of x you are using. For x values from -5 to 1, but not including 1, you calculate f(x) by using the upper function. f(x) = x^2 + 3. For x values grater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 5, then you use the lower function, f(x) = x. In this problem you are asked what is f(1). Since the question is for x = 1, you must use the lower function.

@mathstudent55 Is my answer correct? I got 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 1 since f(x) = x and we are solving for f(1) in the lower function?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct. Look again at what @matricked showed you. He already had f(1) = 1.

.. oh, I didn't see what he wrote lol..
