OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

How many electrons in an atom can share the quantum numbers n= 2 and = 1? 2 4 6 8 @ganeshie8

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

That's still a cursive L

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

would it still be only 2?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

like this : \(\large n = 2\) \(\large l = 1\) ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(m\) ranges from \(-l\) to \(l\), so : \(m\) = -1, 0, 1

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that means 3 values for \(m\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

for each of these values, the spin quantum number can have 2 states : +1/2, -1/2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so total possible electrons with n=2, l=1 are : 3x2 = 6

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

okay c: so its c!

OpenStudy (lovelyharmonics):

lol my quiz shut down :/ and i was only able to do it once :P oh well ill have my teacher reset it tommorow .-. then we can do it again :D no go have fun with your math neshie! :D

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
