Did the New Deal end the Depression? The short answer is no. World War Two would ultimately do that. And there are certainly arguments made that some if not most of his efforts prolonged the Depression. But did FDR's New Deal help in easing the suffering during the Depression? Many would argue yes, as millions of people were afforded a job, issued a paycheck, and deposited money into a bank account, all things that many Americans could not do in 1932. Further, the New Deal inspired many Americans and gave them a sense of hope from the federal government's efforts to make their lives better. Overall, the New Deal transformed the role of the federal government in a way that lasts to this day. Programs and laws passed during the 1930s are still part of American society, many of which are simply taken for granted - agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC); laws like the Fair Labor Standards Act that give us the minimum wage, the eight-hour work day, overtime pay, and regulates child labor; Social Security that gives Americans a guarantee of a pension once turning 62; and of course the American infrustructure, parks, dams, and other resources, that exist because of programs like the PWA, WPA, and CCC. Moreover, Roosevelt and the New Dealers that supported him helped change the focus of the government to what it owes the American people. But what about what the American people owe themselves and the government? Did the New Deal create generations of Americans overly dependant on the government? Indeed, it set the stage, for better or for worse, for further government intervention in the 1960s and continues into the present in the form of modern liberalism; hence, the debate between conservatives and liberals today on the proper role of government in the economy and in the lives of individual Americans. http://www.gettysburg.k12.pa.us/webpages/hhistory/accus.cfm?subpage=314960
