Hence components of the sample move different distances along the plate depending upon the affinity for the adsorbent in the solvent. Could someone please explain what this means to me. I don't really understand it

From what I understand,the displacement of the particles of the sample depends on the degree on which the particles' combine with the solvent. Not sure though :/ Is this a chem lab?

yeah....i just don't understand the affinity for the adsorbent in the solvent part
