Algebra 22 Online
OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

The sum of three numbers is 62. The second number is equal to the first number diminished by 4. The third number is four times the first. What are the numbers? Which three expressions could be used to represent the numbers? n; n - 4; 4n n; 4 - n; n + 4 n; n/4; n + 4

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

Hey Gaming. What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

I have no idea thats why im asking

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

Well take a guess

OpenStudy (phi):

Here's a hint. the first number is "n"

OpenStudy (phi):

The second number is equal to the first number diminished by 4. any idea what "diminished by 4" means ?

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

Elimination is what you want to do first is what phi is doing

OpenStudy (phi):

it would be good to know how to answer this question, because all of algebra depends on you understanding this. any idea what "diminished by 4" means ?

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

Take Away?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. Diminish means "make smaller"

OpenStudy (phi):

how do you make a number smaller by 4 ? what do you "do to it" ?

OpenStudy (phi):

Example, if you have the number 7. what do you do to make it smaller by 4 ?

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

You Subtract 4

OpenStudy (phi):

exactly. now how do you write down "first number subtract 4" if we call the first number "n"

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

n-4 right?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. notice if we used a "real" number like 7, we would write 7-4, and get the answer 3 but if all we know is the "name", the best we can do is say n-4

OpenStudy (phi):

now The third number is four times the first the first number has the name "n" we want 4 times the first number how do we write that ?

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

4n

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. 4n is short for 4*n (we don't bother putting in the multiply sign if it's a real number times the "name" of a number. this short cut does not work for two real numbers like 4*4 ... because 44 might mean forty-four)

OpenStudy (phi):

now look for the answer that has n, n-4, 4n

OpenStudy (xxgaming_mastaxx):

I found it thank you so much!
