An small plane is 4 miles by land away from the airport. The angle of elevation from the airport to the airplane is 6.5 Degrees. What is the altitude of the plane? Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a mile. a. 0.03 miles b. 0.46 miles c. 35.1 miles d. 8.6 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This has to do with Right Triangles BTW

OpenStudy (imstuck):

You need to find x, the altitude of the plane. Do you know which trig identity you would use that relates the side adjacent to the angle to the side opposite the angle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have the choices of Tangent, Sine, and Cosine, I know that much. And I know about SOH CAH TOA also.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm guessing Tangent since the opposite of Angle B (Opposite leg) and the Adjacent leg are being referanced

OpenStudy (imstuck):

The S, C and T are the sin cos tan. So which one relates the Opposite side to the Adjacent side?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

tangent is correct.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Like this:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Solve for x by multiplying both sides by 4:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

(4)tan6.5=x

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Find the tangent of 6.5 on your calculator (in degree mode!) and multiply that by 4 to get your answer. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.45

OpenStudy (imstuck):

b is the answer, because you need to round. But yes, you're right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

GREAT!!!! YOU HAVE ACTUALLY MADE THIS EASY TO UNDERSTAND!!!!!! So I find the mathematical sign of the angle stated then multiply it by the side given!!!!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

; ) !!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I LOVE YOU XD XD XD *hugs tightly and gives you all da medalz*

OpenStudy (imstuck):

lol! You're cute!
