Mrs. Ramiriz is making pies to sell at the local farmer’s market. It costs her $5 to make each pie, plus a one-time cost of $30 for baking supplies. She plans to sell the pies for $12 each. Which equation can be used to find the number of pies she needs to sell to break even?

Welcome to OpenStudy @zahraaalfa! Awesome job asking your first question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We can represent the number of pies she makes to be x. We also need to add $30 to the equation to take the baking supply cost into consideration. The Cost can be represented by C. C = 5x + 30 is the equation to use to determine the Cost! 5 times the number of pies she makes plus the $30 for baking supplies! If we look at just the cost when she doesn't sell any pies, we can say x = 0 That means C = 5(0) + 30 or C = 30, it means that she has to pay $30 or the Cost is $30 when she sells no pies. This makes sense since the baking supplies were $30. Are you with me so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yesss thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you need me to keep going or is it clear what you need to do now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you please keep going?? just a little more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Absolutely!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so we want to know what equation is needed to show how many pies she needs to sell to break even.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, so would we set it equal to 12x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember it cost her $5 to make the pie and $30 for all the supplies.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One minute =0P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is exactly right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what would your equation look like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg thank you so much!! you're a life savor

Well, np @zahraaalfa.
