In order to use IDLE, I right click on an existing file, choose "Edit with IDLE," open the file start a new one then close the previously opened. This strikes me as too convoluted but the direct IDLE shortcut doesn't seem to open. Does anyone have a reason and/or solution? Thank You very much.

I think that that is what you have to do on windows. There are many possible solutions, I am using Spyder which comes with SciPy it has an editor and a Python console in the same window. There are also many other free to use editors that can be used to edit python code.

thank you

If you are using windows 8, go to the start screen. Search for IDLE and make a shortcut on your start screen or on your toolbar. This will open IDLE without having to rely on an already created document.
