Widget Wonders produces widgets. they have found that the cost, C(X), of making x wigets is a quadratic function in terms of x. the company also discovers that it costs $23 to produce 2 widgets, $103 to produce 4 widgets, and $631 to produce 10 widgets. find the total cost of producing 6 widgets.

OpenStudy (driftracer305):
ok i think i got it......but it's a long process..... u ready?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes please
OpenStudy (driftracer305):
k...since they have it as quadratic functions....it will be as such:--
f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c
f(2) = 23 = 4a + 2b + c
f(4) = 103 = 16a + 8b + c
f(10) = 631 = 100a + 10b + c
so u have 3 unknowns to solve for....
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay and how do solve them, sorry im stupid at math
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
The second equation should be
f(4) = 103 = 16a + 4b + c

Are you allowed to use a calculator?
OpenStudy (driftracer305):
yea ...... @jim_thompson5910 ...... i stand corrected...... thx.... wait @angelbaby..... it's long for me as well
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@jim_thompson5910
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
oh my bad, I know what's going on. I meant to say (10,631) and not (6,631)
sorry about that

okay
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
change the last point by double clicking on it
you will be able to edit the point
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
change the first 6 to a 10, then hit enter
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
tell me what f(x) changes into
OpenStudy (anonymous):
f(x)=6x^2+4x-9

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
I'm getting the same
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
now in the input bar, type
f(6)
and hit enter
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
the value that pops up is ???
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a=236
OpenStudy (anonymous):
231 sorry

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
hmm oh ok, yeah 231
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so that's the total cost to produce 6 units
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i have 4 more like this to go ugh
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
doing this problem by hand would mean you'd have to solve a system of equations (or use matrix math). Both definitely ugly
geogebra definitely simplifies things
OpenStudy (anonymous):
its saying its incorrect

can you show me what it's saying?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
i see, the numbers are different from what is shown at the very top of the page
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
your new points are
(2,16)
(4,18)
(10,48)
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
same idea and you're still looking for f(6)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so all you have to do is change those 3 points
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thats a different equation , im sorry .i havent slept in 3 days so i cant process right now
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
that's ok, maybe getting a bit of sleep will help
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i cant sleep till its done these are my last 5 then im finished with the unit'
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
alright

so basically if its for example 3 widgits for $15 its 3,15
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
correct, the point (3,15)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay i get it now, thank you so much
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you're welcome

what about this one?

what would the cords be?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
x is the time
y is the height
1 second, 58 ft ---> (1,58)
2 seconds, 112 ft ---> (2,112)
it starts on the ground at 0 seconds ---> (0,0)
The three points are
(0,0)
(1,58)
(2,112)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thanks you
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you're welcome
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do i do the same with this one like i did with the last?
