break it up into two shapes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
find the area of the square and the area of the triangle then add them together
OpenStudy (astrophysics):
Area of square = a^2
Area of triangle = 1/2*b*h
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok, but how do i find the area if there are no numbers?
OpenStudy (astrophysics):
\[A _{s} =a^2\]
\[A _{t}=\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }bh\]

the units are the numbers, count the squares inside the shapes
OpenStudy (astrophysics):
Well I'm not sure of the exact question, since it requires a log in.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
d to e is how many squares?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
its ok @Astrophysics i have an account so I'm able to see the question
OpenStudy (astrophysics):
But it seems you're in good hands @ninjasandtigers will help you :)

I certainly will :D
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
right and how many squares from d to c
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so 4*4 will be the area of the square

OpenStudy (anonymous):
then you need to find the area of the triangle and add the two areas together
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so 16 is the area of the square?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yup
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and 16 for the area of the triangle? So would it be 16+16
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no

from B to C its 6
OpenStudy (anonymous):
from B to A its 10 right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
|dw:1405478063626:dw|
OpenStudy (anonymous):
b to x will be 10, i put in x so it is easier to look at
OpenStudy (anonymous):
what would x to a be

like on a grid?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yup :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
did you figure it out? @monet0223
OpenStudy (anonymous):
sorry, but on a grid it would be (6,5) right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so a (6,0) b(-4,5) and c(6,5)

@ninjasandtigers was i right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok so from 6 to 5 is how many units
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@monet0223
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a to x is 5 units so use the triangle area formula of 1/2bh. so it would look like 1/2(5)(10) then add that answer to 16 and you will have your answer @monet0223
