Which energy pyramid cannot be inverted? a. pyramid of numbers b. pyramid of biomass c. pyramid of energy d. all can be inverted

OpenStudy (abhisar):

What do u think ?

OpenStudy (somy):

oh there is one option that sounds absolutely ridiculous what do u think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its D

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I mean D is ridiculous and not the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats my mistake in this lol?

OpenStudy (somy):

lol D is exception xD

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Energy pyramid can never be inverted !

OpenStudy (somy):

A pyramid of numbers shows the relative number of organisms at each stage of a food chain. In this case a pyramid of biomass is a better diagram to use.A pyramid of biomass shows the total mass of organisms at each stage of a food chain.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

The pyramid of biomass may be "inverted". For example, in a pond ecosystem, the standing crop of phytoplankton, the major producers, at any given point will be lower than the mass of the heterotrophs, such as fish and insects.

OpenStudy (somy):

An ecological pyramid (also trophic pyramid or energy pyramid) is a graphical representation designed to show the biomass or biomass productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem. Biomass is the amount of living or organic matter present in an organism.

Eenergy pyramids can't be inverted because only 10% of the energy of one level moves on to the next (because some energy consumed remains undigested, or is urinary waste or is lost as heat when being transferred) so the most amount of energy, usually coming from sunlight, is at the bottom, then the energy that the producers have, then the energy that the consumers get.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

For example this is a pyramid of numbers http://prntscr.com/43j24f

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So there will always be maximum energy in 1st trophic level...then 2nd trophic level...and so on

OpenStudy (somy):

yup that is right basically saying Pyramid of Biomass- REPRESENTS energy but pyramid of Energy does not exist

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thanks again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at the same time keep in mine that Inverted pyramids have predators stably outnumber prey, with the most biomass locked up in the highest rung.
