CHECK MY ANSWERS? So far a total of 42 tickets have been sold for the school play for a total revenue of $194. How many student tickets have been sold? Set up and solve a system of equations to solve the problem.

OpenStudy (briana.img):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

was this the last one ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me know what equation you got

OpenStudy (briana.img):

x+y=42 7x+3y=194 7(42-y)+3y=194 294-7y+3y=194 10y=194=294 10y=100 x+10=12 x=2

OpenStudy (briana.img):

second to last one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on a second

OpenStudy (briana.img):

they're not right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i know they aren't i mean the equations are i am trying to find the mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is good \[7(42-y)+3y=194\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is good \[294-7y+3y=194\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the next line is wrong, and i saw you made a similar mistake before it is combining like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the next line you had \(10y\) but there is no \(10y\)

OpenStudy (briana.img):

one of the equal signs is suppose to be a subtraction oops

OpenStudy (briana.img):

because i added 7+3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right you added but it is not \(7y+3y\) it is \(-7y+3y\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gotta be careful with the signs it is a common mistake so lets go slow and not do two steps at once

OpenStudy (briana.img):

so it's suppose to be -4y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[294-7y+3y=194\]is right what should the next line look like doing only on thing at a time (combining like terms )?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

294-10y=194 i just thought to subtract 294 and 194 ?!?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait you already said \(-7y+3y=-4y\) right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you should be looking at \[294-4y=194\]

OpenStudy (briana.img):

oh yeah oops

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now lets proceed carefully and clearly ( i am not trying to be annoying, really) " i just thought to subtract 294 and 194" makes no real sense what you need to do next is subtract \(294\)from both sides

OpenStudy (briana.img):

290y=100 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[294-4y=194\\ -4y=194-294\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i.e. subtract \(294\) from both sides there is more combining like terms, \(294-4y\neq 190y\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in other words \[-4y=-100\]

OpenStudy (briana.img):

wow i'm so dumb i thought of doing that but it didn't seem right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

more or less clear? you had two mistakes on this line \[10y=194-294\] one is that it should not be \(10y\) but rather \(-4y\) and the other is that \(194-294=-00\) not \(100\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol not so dumb learning this stuff

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i will give you a hint that might make these easier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you had \[7x+3y=194\] and went to \[7(42-y)+3y=194\] i would have used instead \[7x+3(42-x)=194\]

OpenStudy (briana.img):

is finding x easier?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is not a matter that it is an \(x\) rather than a \(y\) they are just variables it is because the \(7\) in front of the \(x\) is larger than the \(3\) in front of the \(y\) and so we won't end up with so much negative stuff

OpenStudy (briana.img):

@satellite73 oooh okay so it was all of the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[7x+3(42-x)=194\] multiply out and get \[7x+126-3x=194\] now combining like terms is less confusing \[4x+126=194\] and also subtracting is less confusing \[4x=68\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see no negatives!

OpenStudy (briana.img):

oh okay! thank you for understanding my struggle!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw did you get the "final answer" yet?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

yeah x=-13 and y =25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 25 is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now lets make sure we get the \(x\) correctly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what equation did you use to find \(x\) once you had \(y=25\) ?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

x+25=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where in the world did that come from ? ?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

WAIT

OpenStudy (briana.img):

it's suppose to be x+y=24

OpenStudy (briana.img):

omg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol sold negative 13 tickets

OpenStudy (briana.img):

x+y=42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok you must be getting tired yeah that one!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in any case now you have \(x=17,y=25\)

OpenStudy (briana.img):

yepp! thanks for helping me catch that mistake

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem how many more?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

one more!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets knock it out quick!!

OpenStudy (briana.img):

do you want me to open up another question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nah you can put it here if you like my last one for the night

OpenStudy (briana.img):

Suppose a lab needs to make 450 liters of a 37% acid solution, but the only solutions available to the lab are 20% acid and 65% acid. What system of equations can be used to find the number of liters of each solution that should be mixed to make the 37% solution? Let c represent the number of liters of 20% acid solution and let d represent the number of liters of 65% acid solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

damn so you actually have to type in the equation with \(c\) and \(d\) right?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

yepp!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh but it is easy because is it multiple choice!! clearly \[c+d=450\] so you can skip the others

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then \[.2c+.65d=.37\times 450\]for the other one

OpenStudy (briana.img):

yeah i was about to say i had a feeling it was that one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a very rate A answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is next, or is that all?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

yeah i was skeptical was going more for d

OpenStudy (briana.img):

that's all!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you don't have to solve it?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

no!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then i have a questtion why are you taking an exam in the middle of july?

OpenStudy (briana.img):

seriously thank you so much for helping me with all these problems and being patient with me i was always surprised when you were answering my problems because i thought you were annoyed of how slow i was but thank you so much!!

OpenStudy (briana.img):

retaking algebra

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope you pass! you are welcome and now i will not bother you any more, i know how you feel about that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why are people on open study seriously trying to have a conversation with me like i'm just here to learn math not make friends wtf ho ho ho ho !!!!

OpenStudy (briana.img):

LOL omg no

OpenStudy (briana.img):

people would ask if i was single

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see

OpenStudy (briana.img):

and people would tell me their whole life story

OpenStudy (briana.img):

and all their interests etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tmi as we say k i am off good luck hope you passed

OpenStudy (briana.img):

it's normal on twitter to use someone else as your icon so i thought it'd be normal to use one of the people i admire as my icon but i guess thats not the case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah people do it all the time

OpenStudy (briana.img):

thank you so much once again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw (again) and gnight

OpenStudy (briana.img):

goodnight
