three terms that mean "solution" for quadratic equations?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Hmm, I can think of "roots" "zeros" ....Not sure what they want for a 3rd... Maybe "x-intercepts" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was unsure, too. Thanks though :p

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

No problem!

|dw:1405726131902:dw| Hints: The solution for a quadratic equation, such as: \(x^2-3x+2=0\) represent the points of intersection of the curve (parabola) with the x-axis. These points are also called the x-intercepts, which are always located at the y-coordinate equal to zero, so they are also called zero. For some traditional reason, the solutions to an equation are also called roots. See following link for attempts to find the etymology of the word. http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/52673.html
