in an ac electrical equipment what do the rated values(like power,current,voltage) signify? I mean which of them are rms and avg quantities and why such values (like the rms) are specified instead of other values(like peak values)?
@Mashy
rated values are always RMS!!
unless its specified Otherwise!
why rms?
cause RMS is always the DC equivalent.. its always nice to think in terms of DC rather than AC.. Especially power.. if u want to calculate on an average how much power is consumed or dissipated .. it turns out P = vrms into i rms.. therefore rms values are DC equivalents!
don't ask me to derive that.. cause i hate using equations :P here
ok..don't worry I wont :)
If the voltage and current are in phase, the average power is given by: \[P _{average}=V _{rms} \times I _{rms}\]
