if the graph of y=af(x-b) stretches the graph of absolute value x by a factor of 3,reflects it about the y axis and shifts it 2 units to the right ,which of the following are correct values of a and b A.a=-3 b=-2 B.a=3 b=-2 C.a=3 b=2 D.a=-3 b=2

@iGreen can u help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone help me

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A shift to the right or left is made by replacing x with x - b. If x is positive, the shift is to the right. If x is negative, the shift is to the left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

y = f(x) compared to y = a*f(x) If a is negative, it will reflects the graph across the x axis.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

In your problem it states "reflects it about the y axis and" Are you sure it's supposed to be reflected about the __y-axis__, and not the __x-axis__? Was the problem copied correctly?

so what would the answer be

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to answer my question above which you never did. My question is in my response just above my two graphs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its supposed to be reflected on the x axis

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

OK. That's better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The a that multiplies f(x - b), as in af(x - b) does two things. It stretches the function if it is greater than 1 and it shrinks the function if it is between 0 and 1. If a is negative, then the negative reflects the graph across the x axis.
