Which one of the following is a solution of the system? x + y < -3 and x + y > 8 (6, 9) (-2, 4) Infnitely Many Solutions No solution

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Look at the two inequalities. The left sides are the same. x + y means the sum of two numbers. Ok so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes so then it would be no solution?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The sum of any two numbers is a number. Now read each inequality and see if it makes sense for them to be together. Remember, x + y is a number. The first inequality states that the number x + y is less than -3. The second inequality states that the number x + y is greater than 8. Can a number be at the same time less than 3 and greater than 8?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are correct.
