I am studying chemistry [atomic structure] but i encountered a term , which i can't explain it relates to mathematics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is a simple-whole number ratio

OpenStudy (mathmate):

In H2O, the ratio of number of atoms is 2:1, that's a whole ratio.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

In C2H6, the whole number ratio is 2:6, but it is not simple, because it can be reduced to 1:3, which is your simple whole number ratio.

I am deviating for a moment the molecular formula of sucrose is \[\huge C_{12}H_{22}O_7\] \[\huge 12:22:11\] Why is this not a simple whole number ratio

OpenStudy (mathmate):

* \(\huge C_{12}H_{22}O_{11}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah sorry i made a typing error, but why is it not

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Not sure, I don't see that it can be further simplified. Hope it is not because it is a ratio between three numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is a trivial question anyways , will ask my prof....

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Would you be kind enough to post your prof's answer, some time? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes sure :)

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Thank you! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will tag you

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Thanks! :)
