@mathmate what are the symbols between the 0 and the x and y ?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

\(\ne\) means "not equal".

OpenStudy (scarlettred):

ohh thank you

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Proportions are like fractions. You can create an equivalent proportion just like you can create an equivalent fraction. For example, \(\frac68 = \frac34\) But when variables are used, we do not want a zero in the denominator, that is why there's a restriction that \(x\ne 0\) and \(y\ne 0\).

OpenStudy (scarlettred):

thank you @mathmate

You're welcome! :)
