I have a quick question. Is a horizontal line considered as a linear function?

OpenStudy (aum):

Any LINE is a linear function.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Are you sure? So that means a vertical line is a function too?

OpenStudy (aum):

I should qualify my statement: Any LINE is a linear function except a vertical line.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Ok. Would this be considered as a function?|dw:1406128292415:dw|

OpenStudy (aum):

When I said "line" above I meant a "straight line." The above graph is NOT a function because it fails the vertical line test. If I draw a vertical line it intersects the graph at two different points which means one x-value maps into two y-values which is a no no for functions. For functions, each x-value must map into just one y-value.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Alrighty!!:D Thanx soooooo much:D

OpenStudy (aum):

You are welcome.
