OpenStudy (anonymous):

the median in an odd number of data will be a whole number. example, 12345 the median is 3. for data with an even number it will not be a whole number. example 123456. the median is 3.5

OpenStudy (kropot72):

With data that have an odd number of observations the median is simply the middle observation after the data are ranked in order from smallest to largest. When a data set has an even number of members, the median lies halfway betwenn the two values in the middle of the sample; for example: 62, 73, 73, 78, 86, 89, 90, 95 The two middle values are 78 and 86. the median is then (78 + 86)/2 = 82. Note that four values are below 82 and four are above 82.
