You roll two dice. What is the probability that the sum of the dice is greater than 6 and one die shows a 3? A 6 X 6 table of dice outcomes will help you to answer this question.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Something like this table http://bestcase.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dicediagram.jpg should help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 would you be able to explain the table? I don't really understand how to look for the answer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Basically every entry in the table is the result of adding the two dice values For instance, row1, column3 has the element '4' this is the result of 1+3 (1 in row 1, all the way to the left...3 in column 3, at the very top)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see how the table is generated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i understand that, but what confuses me is that i would have to write the answer in fractions and these are my options A. 1/3 B.6/21 C. 25/36 D. 1/6 and i don't know how to generate those fractions from the table

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I know you already got it, but I figured I'd post this anyway (it's another example)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Anyways, let's focus on the question What is the probability that the sum of the dice is greater than 6 and one die shows a 3?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's highlight the row that starts with 3 and the column that starts with 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

How many numbers did I highlight?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which of those sums are larger than 6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how many numbers are in the table total

OpenStudy (anonymous):

36

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the probability is 6/36 = 1/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much! :)
