OpenStudy (capallan):

Why do plants have a slow transport system?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In a plant body large number of cells is dead. Moreover plants do not have any pumping machine like heart that makes transportation in animals faster. For these reasons plants have slow transport system.

OpenStudy (capallan):

Can you give a bit more detailed answer which also includes the phloem and xylem? Cheers @_SebasQ !

OpenStudy (capallan):

I didn't get the dead cells part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One sec my dude.

OpenStudy (capallan):

Sure!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First off do you know what the xylem and phloem are?

OpenStudy (capallan):

Xylem transports water and phloem transports food. Xylem carries water from roots to different parts due to the suction created by transpiration. Phloem carries food and other substances by the process know as translocation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok with my somewhat decent answer and this information can you make some sort of assumption towards the final answer?

OpenStudy (capallan):

Ok, so does it mean that the plant's transport is too complex and slows it down while a mammals transport system is not that complex making it fast?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's a big part of it, having a heart makes the transportation process way faster. Now you said you wanted to include the xylem and phloem into the answer right?

OpenStudy (capallan):

yup. Still didn't get the dead cells part you mentioned earlier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Plants need the hard, dead cells to remain upright – they don’t have skeletons, and each cell must support itself or receive direct support from tissues around it, in order for the plant to remain upright. Most plant tissues are dead, since dead cells can provide mechanical strength as easily as live ones and therefore need less maintenance. Also, plants are stationary and hence require less energy. Animals require energy for movement. Animals are supported by hard (often bony) skeletons and do not need dead cells to support them. This was confusing to me at first too but it's actually pretty cool.

OpenStudy (capallan):

Okay. Thanks dude! Nice selphie by the way!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lmao thanks man. Do you get it though?

OpenStudy (capallan):

Thanks anyway. I understood. It would be nice if you could just sum it up though!

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

hello @CapAllan the dead cells part mentioned above is just linked to the xylem and phloem.. do you know the detailed structure of xylem and phloem

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

the xylem and phloem contains some dead cells associated with them...!! do you know..?

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

the xylem has tracheids and vessels which are dead and phloem has companion cells these all parts take help the xylem and phloem to perform their transportation..

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

did you get this @CapAllan

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

hello you there @CapAllan

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

The slow transport system to the plants is due to Ascent of sap as the plants absorb water from the ground through roots and as all the parts of the plants are sensitive.... each and every part will take a small amount of water and the water goes up and simultaneously water evaporates out of the plant body through stomata we call it transpiration.. as these both occur simultaneously the water transports slow without damaging the parts of the plant..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@CapAllan one thing u shal know... animal organ system are much more complex than the that of plants.... the reason is the processes occuring in animals more complex comparatively .... plant have slow transport system because the activities of their life are slow.... they don't have to make quick responses , have to hard and rapid physical works.... e.g plants have lower metabolic rate , they dont need much energy so respiration rate is slow in them ...so they dont need O2 to b quickly transported to their cells...while in animals metabolic rate is high ..so need more energy so they have high respiration rate and hence they have a complex and fast organ system for breathing and respiration and transport of oxygen to cell with help of blood , heart is for the same purpose...

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

@saroash is also right in other point of view did you understand this my friend @CapAllan

OpenStudy (shreehari499):

Oh C'mon @CapAllan ..these people here have taken a lot of hardwork to make u understand..and yet you are not responding to it..?..and good work @deepika.comet and @saroash !

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

@shreehari499 \(\large\color{green}{Thank~you~so~much~my~friend~Shreehari}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

xylem phloem are organ which help in transport ... if our body was like plants we had to do less activities we were sessile too ...we may also have xylem phloem instead of our prgans :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@deepika.comet @shreehari499 thnks :)

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

hmmm ya @saroash you are right..!!!

OpenStudy (deepika.comet):

\(\large\color{green}{you're~most~welcome}\) @saroash

OpenStudy (capallan):

Sorry guys! I was offline. Yes I understand now! Thank you @deepika.comet, @saroash and @shreehari499 for your help. I never thought that my question would gather such a lot of attention. I appreciate each and every one of you for helping me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) our pleasure
