How does less than or greater than even work?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So you're comfortable with the equals sign, yes? If I say \(\Large\rm x=4\), this means x takes on the value 4. Only that value. If I instead say \(\Large\rm x\gt4\), this no longer represents a single value, it's a whole set of values. x can be 5, it can be 6, and so on... x is the `set of values` larger than 4. Takes a little getting used to, thinking of a set or range of values, instead of a single value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help me with this question, Which of the following points lie in the solution set to the following system of inequalities? y less than or greater to x - 5 y greater than or equal to -x - 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. (-5, 2) b. (5, -2) c. (-5, -2) d. (5, 2)

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So one option would be to plug each of your choices into the system, and see which one holds `true`. Example: Let's plug option a. (-5,2) into the system : \[\Large\rm y \le x-5\]\(\Large\rm 2 \le -5-5\qquad\qquad\to\qquad 2\le-10\) \[\Large\rm y\ge -(x)-4\]\(\Large\rm 2\ge -(-5)-4\qquad\to\qquad 2\ge 1\) 2 is greater than or equal to 1, yes? But the first part is not true, 2 is NOT less than or equal to -10, right?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

That eliminates option a. for us.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Confused at all how I plugged those numbers in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I believe the answer to be c (-5,-2) when I plug this into your solutions: y< or > -x−5 -2<+5−5 →2<0 yes y< or > −(x)−4 -2<=−(−5)−4 →2<=-1 yes Is this right thinking?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

There is no `less than or greater than` symbol. You must be reading it incorrectly. Did you mean `less than or equal to`?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope that is what it says.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't figure it out either wtf

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if possible can you take a screenshot of original problem and attach ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure, why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whoops, But that is the exact question, it says less than or greater to. It shows up multiple times and I do not understand what it means, does it mean not equal to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't take a screen shot i guess

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the issue is not with what it means, the issue is with not seeing that terminology before and there is no need for extra confusing terminology like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is a system of inequalities if that helps any

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

y less than or greater to x - 5 can be interpreted as \(\large y \ne x-5\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, y = x -5 is a solid line on a graph and y not = to x -5 is everything but the solid line then?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats what you get if u force urself to interpret what it means but i think the question could be wrong cuz i have never seen "less than or greater to" in any highschool textbooks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So then my teacher is just making it harder for me at this point?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the best way to settle this is to ask your teacher if our interpretation is correct...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I appreciate the help, I am definitely going to contact her and ask her.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

okay :) do let us know once you figure it out...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright sounds good, (: thanks for the help though, I am pretty sure you're right idk why my teacher would make things so difficult.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :)
