What is the value of the expression? 16 – 4 + (160 ÷ 20)^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shyguybros @Whitemonsterbunny17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Help me!!!! lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Another Order of Operations Problem, okay. What do you think is the first thing you should do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Parenthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so 160 divided by 20 is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so now you have 8, what do we do after that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm 16-4=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is this what we do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, you aren't wrong, but we actually need to Solve (8)^4... which is...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32 or 2 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, that's 8 multiplied by 4. It's 8 to the power of 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh mmkay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 to the power of 4 is 4096

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct, So according to PEMDAS, you're supposed to solve the Parentheses, then the Exponent and so on so forth. So remember to do any parentheses then an exponent next time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now all we have to do is add and subtract, what do we do now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8+4096

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure where that 8 came from...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[16 - 4 + 4096\] This is your equation so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry 12+ 4096 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rookie mistake. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, which equals 5108

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks i need you to help me help someone out if you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See you would think you would add 4 and 4096, and then subtract 16 by 5100, but actually you just add/subtract straight across. You're welcome :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can probably help your friend, that's what you're saying right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thnx and yep
