Mixed Fraction question 16 3/8 - 9 5/8 Trying to relearn my math foundations but I don't know what keeps stumping me about this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well since the higher numbers fraction is smaller you have to give one of the ones to the tenths so itll be now 15 11/8- 9 5/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think you can do the rest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can, but question by giving the 1 to the tenths i know you borrowed from the whole number but how does that make 3 into 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Was what you did was add the denominator to the numerator from borrowing one from the whole number? how does that work (if possible to explain) I don't like randomly doing things with partial understanding

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well you would multiply 8 by the amount of whole numbers being transferred then add it to the top with the other numbers :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A easier way to do this is turn it into an improper fraction so 16 times 8 plus 3 then 9 times 8 plus 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

grrr beat me to it :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 131 }{ 8 }- \frac{ 77 }{ 8}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract that keep the denominator 8 then make it into a mixed number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks from the both of you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i could give two medals i would lol

Result is 6 3/4 See mixed number fraction calc: http://www.hackmath.net/en/calculator/fraction?input=16+3%2F8+-+9+5%2F8&submit=Calculate
