A Two-Party System What purposes do political parties serve, and what are the advantages of a two-party system? What are coalition governments, and why are they often unstable? Section 2 Political Party Organization How do political parties raise money, and how does Congress regulate fund-raising? How do presidential candidates use public funds for their campaigns? Section 3 The Right to Vote What protections do voters receive from the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act of 1965? Section 4 Nominating and Electing Our Leaders How do the major political parties select their presidential candidates? Why do some people want to replace the electoral college?

OpenStudy (chrisisdope1):

1.Political parties serve a very important role in the democratic system. They give people choices to choose from. A one party system does not give you choices. The 2 party system is meant encourage political parties to find common positions which appeal to wide swaths of the electorate, this engages more of the people. It can lead to political stability which leads, in turn, to economic growth. 2.Voters, business groups, labor unions, and many other organizations contribute money to the political party that they believe best represents their interests. 3.The Act, reaffirming the 15th Amendment, prohibits states from imposing any "voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure ... to deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color. 4.They hold primaries and caucuses. Its left to the states to determine which to hold. A primary is like a general election in that ballots are cast in secret. A caucus is like a town meeting in which participants publicly declared for a candidate. And 4.Because they are not required by law to vote by what the popular vote wants, they are chosen by their parties for their dedication/monetary contributions to their parties, they can easily be bribed, not to mention they do not represent 3rd parties, they only represent Republicans and Democrats, that is why no 3rd party candidate can ever have a chance in winning an election, that is why we will always be forced to choose between the lesser of two evils and those republicans/democrats will never have true competition for presidency.
