Naming Alkanes I'm just wondering what will be the parent hydrocarbon if the number of carbons in the ring and on the chain are equal?

rvc (rvc):

the functional group is considered

??

i did not understand ur q

OpenStudy (aaronq):

You use brackets (something like this) 1-pentane(2-cyclobutane)3-isopropylcyclohexane But no one does this in real life, there are programs where you draw the molecule and it names it according to IUPAC rules for you.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

by the way there are 6 carbons on the ring and 5 on the longest chain, so there is no ambiguity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thanks!, but what will happen if there are 6 carbons on the chain?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i think the cyclo- part is the taken as the parent chain

OpenStudy (aaronq):

So i was wrong on that, the name of this compound would be 1-(2-cyclobutylpentane)-3-isopropylcyclohexane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem!
