Can someone help me with the scarlet letter. I just need to know what does the oak door, the rusty hinges, and the exterior EACH symbolize?
You should read the 3rd paragraph, yeah not skimming it. Starting with and there's also a rosebush. http://www.shmoop.com/scarlet-letter/prison-door-symbol.html
or is that the 4th paragraoh?
so it says "darkness of sins versus God's grace"
But it doesnt say anything about what all the stuff means. So does all the things just mean harsh justice?
so in my / your own words, you should say that the door symbolises the darkness and stritchness of the Puritans. The hinges symbolizes the puritan's negative treatment and behavior toward the women with the A letter.
um, you have to infer a little bit.
once you nailed the hinges into the oak door, it forever leaves a scar on it. That scar, is the emotional scars. Those hinges are the harsh and selfish actions that hurt the women with the A letter.
are* emotional scars.
and I'm unsure what you mean be exterior... the outside settings of the house, including the bush of flowers?
it was suppose to be water-stained exterior @study100
the water stains contributes to the darkness and gloomy setting of the house. In my words, when I think of something stained, I think of something being tainted. The woman in the story had to wear the letter because she was wrongly accused of sleeping with men other than her husband. In other words, the water stained exterior represented her ruined and tainted reputation in the town she lives in.
I had to do something writing then thinking about this haha. That is my best hypothesis.
Thanks that actually makes a lot of sense. @study100
