A tepee in the shape of a right cone has a slant height of 18.5 feet and a diameter of 20 feet. Approximately how much canvas would be needed to cover the tepee? (Do not include the "floor") 116 sq ft 581 sq ft 58 sq ft 89 sq ft

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My answer was 581 sq feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dannyrod2000

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

ok so what formula did you use?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For this one I use the formula, Pi r(l+r)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahah you still there?

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

yea sorry i just keep thinking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its fine.

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

ok so the radius is half of the diameter so it is 10 for the radius

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

\[(3.14)10(18.5+10)\]

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

this is what you got right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah.

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

\[(3.14)10\] i mean

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

\[=?\]

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

first how did you solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is my equation Pi(10)(18.5+10)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what I did was I added 18.5+ and 10 which got me, 28.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So my new equation was pi(10)(28.5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then I multiplied 10by 28.5 which got me to 285

OpenStudy (anonymous):

285pi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then I pied it. which got me to 895.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but then I found the area of the circle since it is asking you not to include that with the formula..pir^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which turns to be this, pi10^2 which simplifies to 100pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then pi it and get 314.2 then I subtract it from the total volume 895.4-314.2 which equals 581.2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kay that was a lot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

surface area*

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

perfect! you really worked hard to get the correct answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

no problem!
