Given the two expressions shown below: square root of 3 plus square root of 2 square root of 5 plus square root of 6 Which statement best describes the two expressions? Both are rational. Both are irrational. A is rational, but B is irrational. A is irrational, but B is rational.

OpenStudy (ddcamp):

Let's look at the terms individually. Which ones (if any) are rational, and which (if any) are irrational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 and 6 Rational && 3 And 5 Irrational I Think @DDCamp

OpenStudy (ddcamp):

The square root of a number is only rational if the original number is a square number (i.e. 1, 4, 9, 16 etc.). Otherwise, the square root can't be a whole number, and is irrational.

Ohhh Okay ' So Whats The Next Step ? @DDCamp

OpenStudy (ddcamp):

When you're adding numbers, if you add a rational and an irrational number, you get another irrational number. If you add two irrational numbers, you also get an irrational number.
