Medal! Claire was asked to simplify the following expression below. 6 × y + y × 4 She performed the following steps and claimed that she had generated an equivalent expression. Step 1. 6y + y × 4 Step 2. 7y × 4 Step 3. 28y Part A. Using y=2 explain why Claire is incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

order of operations says that multiplication goes before addition, so in step 1 it's supposed to be yx4 to get 6y+4y=10y just plug in y=2 to check your work

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Can you help me do that? I mean I have been trying to figure out by replacing all of the y's with the 2's, but my answer is not working. @amonaroll32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, 10(2)=20 and 28(2)=56

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since they don't equal it's incorrect

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Where did you get the 10 and the 28?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

ok okay I got it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Step 3. 28y from the question 10y from my first post

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Can you help on another part of this same question please?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Part B Write an expression with one term that is equivalent to the expression Claire was asked to simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first post :)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Can you just repost that for me because I don't know what you mean by first post.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

order of operations says that multiplication goes before addition, so in step 1 it's supposed to be yx4 to get 6y+4y=10y just plug in y=2 to check your work so 10y is your answer

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So can I just replace another number for y?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Or is it just 10y?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Please answer.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@amonaroll32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just 10y

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Thank you.
