Well for starters diabetes is diagnosed when your body can't convert glucose to energy, or ATP. Insulin is released by the pancreas, when this doesn't occur the body begins to feel weak and sluggish. Sometimes your sugar levels will rise and cause your blood Ph to turn acidic causing organs to shut down. usually it'll start with the kidneys since they're the ones who filter your blood. It's genetic and cannot be passed on to someone else, it's not viral.

^that information is mostly incorrect. Glycolysis and other catabolic processes are not (directly) affected by diabetes. The pathway by which glucose polymerizes into glycogen is disrupted because the hormone that triggers it's absorption is not released by the pancreas.
