Is there anyone in FLVS English1 or English2?
Yep. I just finished English One Honors today, how can I help?
i really need help with the Discussion-Based Assessments for english 1 segment2 do you think you can look at it and see if you can help me?
Do you have the words you had to rescue?
what do you mean?
In the start of each module you get vocabulary to chose from and you pick 5 words
Go to lesson 4.00- Page 2
i never had to do anything from that section :p i started from section 05.02
this is what i got for the DBA
i have to do both of them tomorrow because thats all i have left other than my exam
Okay, so if I remember correctly, module 5 is on argumentation. So I just took a look at the study guide. Do you know what a claim and counterclaim are?
umm a claim is a state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof. and a counterclaim is a claim made to rebut a previous claim.?
Good. (: Paste that into the first part of the document you attached.
Thanks, and alrighty
No problem (: Do you know the difference between an argumentative essay Versus a persuasive essay?
Actually no :(
Okay. (: An argumentitive essay utilizes the claim and counterclaim you have just told me about, so basically, it is a factual essay that favors one opinion but states both sides of the argument. On the other hand, a persuasive essay tends to be biased, meaning it only pertains to one side of an argument, it is more opinionated and doesn't express both sides of an argument.
Does that make sense?
OMG yes but wait.. how does an argumentative essay is basically like an argument in court?
wait.. that came out wrong ._. so basically an argumentative essay is like an argument in court?
In a way, yes.
ohh... so whats the one you would use in court then?
Well read again what @someonenew111 wrote again and ask yourself
If you don't understand I will explain it
Ohhh okay i feel stupid lol i got it now :p
Now do you know that difference of direct quotation and a paraphrase?
The difference in a direct quote and paraphrasing is the wording. A direct quote is repeating exactly what was said. Paraphrasing is repeating the gist of what was said but not using the exact words?
wait i dont know what this is? How do logos, pathos, and ethos fit in with the definition?
Exactly:)
Okay good but i still dont know what that means ^^^
Ethos (Credibility), or ethical appeal, means convincing by the character of the author. We tend to believe people whom we respect. One of the central problems of argumentation is to project an impression to the reader that you are someone worth listening to, in other words making yourself as author into an authority on the subject of the paper, as well as someone who is likable and worthy of respect. Pathos (Emotional) means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions. We can look at texts ranging from classic essays to contemporary advertisements to see how pathos, emotional appeals, are used to persuade. Language choice affects the audience's emotional response, and emotional appeal can effectively be used to enhance an argument. Logos (Logical) means persuading by the use of reasoning. This will be the most important technique we will study, and Aristotle's favorite. We'll look at deductive and inductive reasoning, and discuss what makes an effective, persuasive reason to back up your claims. Giving reasons is the heart of argumentation, and cannot be emphasized enough. We'll study the types of support you can use to substantiate your thesis, and look at some of the common logical fallacies, in order to avoid them in your writing.
Wow that helped alot!
i wasn't expecting that :p
English is my favorite, I remember a few study guides from when I was taking the course.
Ohh, english and math are my worst subjects :/
I'm sorry, I was talking to my grandma xD
umm what about When do you use each a direct quotation and a paraphrase? and lmao it's fine
Well when would you see a direct quotation?
umm would it be to provide an example???
Try in a newspaper when they interview witnesses, or a magazine that had a survey about there product, a TV broadcast. Really anything but these are where they are found the most.
I litterly feel so stupid right now like you dont even know i feel like i need 2 english classes next year :(
Don't be! you are a very smart and intelligent person.
Awe thank you, but really english and math are my worst subjects
Well im here for ya, so don't worry :)
thank you!
for the next question i didnt write my essay but this is it
That's really good! On the first paragraph, the last sentence doesn't need to be there.
thanks! i didnt write it though :/ my friend did..........
but could you help me with the questions?
@someonenew111 can you help me with the second part?
Sure! What do you think would be hard for you about speaking in front of a large audience about a specific topic?
Like, what would be a few things that'd make you uncomftorable when giving a speech?
that make me uncomfortable is when they stare you down like a hawk
like i know they are sopost to look at you but i get so uncomfortable
Okay. So I'm going to take what you told me and make it a bit more broad by saying.. "Making a connection with the audience is a challenge to you and makes you feel uneasy."
lol that sounds way more professional
Wow. Sorry
Well put something along those lines as your answer to 1 and also write if you were able to get over that feeling or not
wait sorry for what? and what question was that?
"What public speaking tips do you find most challenging, and did you improve on them?"
It looked as if it repeated something I had already stated in the comments, that's why I apologized.
ohh it's fine lol, and i dont see that question :( what number is it?
i dont see that at all
It was in the second file you sent. You had already answered the question though and I didn't see it. Here We can work on the question "What makes a strong/effective thesis statement?"
Ohhhh sorry i see it, i need help with this :(
Yesssss, I was confused for a minute, my mistake. Do you know what a thesis statement is?
lol it's fine, umm is it a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft?
A thesis statement is a one-sentence statement that summarizes a main point or claim of an essay.
oh.... ._. and i already did the 2nd question
So we have to look at what makes a thesis effective in an essay and how to make an effective thesis.
Okieee
:p so i have no idea for this How do you write an effective/strong thesis statement?
Okay, this a pretty simple. To write a strong thesis statement you need to include; the topic of the essay, the two or three topics of your body paragraphs, and your main claim (what you believe in or will be talking about in the essay)
They go in that order too.
Ohh wow thank you! you didnt have to put them in order
What you may also want to include under that question is that an effective thesis statement is one sentence answers the question is specific and offers a meaningful interpretation
I'm happy to help (:
thank you! and ohh for question 4 How does William Wordsworth use tone to express his relationship with nature in “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”? this is the story...
I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
I'm not sure with this soley because I got an alternative assignment to do being that I was in honors but I will take a look at it.
I think he uses a tone of serenity to describe his relationship with nature, he seems really at ease and he uses vivid descriptions to engage the reader into his piece of writing.
and i know iv asked alot of questions but can you try and help me with these? i didnt write the story...
4. Did you choose banned books or college athletics as the topic for your writing? Discuss the student’s writing. 20 points a. What was your claim and counterclaim? How did you come up with these? b. What are the steps to the writing process? Why do you need to follow each step? d. When you revised, what were some of the things you needed to revise? How did you know to revise them?
The questions on this are already answered. These are what I went to help you with before
For the first one I would say; Making a connection with the audience is a challenge to you and makes you feel uneasy.
These are already answered in the document though (:
wait...how are they already answered?
I'm confused now. xD
can you help me with this one? What are the steps to the writing process? Why do you need to follow each step?
