Suppose Paul kicks a soccer ball straight up into the air with an initial velocity of 96 feet per second. The function h(t) = -16t^2 + 96t gives the height, in feet, of the soccer ball after t seconds. This function is shown in the graph below. How do I find axis of symmetry?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

The axis of symmetry is when you can cut the parabola in half. you can use the vertex, the axis of symmetry is the "x" coordinate of the vertex. So 3. http://prntscr.com/4an1km

Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whats the vertex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as an ordered pair?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

I'd say (3, 145)? Kinda hard to tell. I don't think it's above 150

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Oh well, you have the function xD I was using the graph. The vertex is found by using: \(\ \sf x = \dfrac{-b}{2a} \) where A = -16 and b = 96 \(\ \sf \dfrac{-96}{-32} \implies 3 \) You have the "x" coordinate. To find the "y" coordinate of the vertex you need to substitute that 3 into h(t) = -16t^2 + 96t.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, so It's (3, 145)?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Close, (3, 144)
