Why do people find the confederate flag offensive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It goes back to the civil war

OpenStudy (anonymous):

during slavery time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that part but why is it offensive the civil war wasnt over slavery

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, but it has to do with the people in the war.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like some people will think it's offensive but that's the reason. It has to do with the time. Where blacks were treated like dirt and junk. I'm half black and it doesn't bother me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've never met anyone that it offends until today and it was on here no one irl has had a problem with it so it puzzles me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, some people take offensive to it. But like I said it has to with the person. She or he could have been black or something. If you want to have it as a picture it's your first amendment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is :) wasn't going to take it down anyways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol. If you want you can give me a metal. For helping you ;) ;D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not every person who flies the confederate flag would think positively of slavery, but it's the flag of a reactionary regime that started a brutal civil war to avoid abolition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well some people treat it as if it were the swastika, but it's all due to ignorance. Most people who still have confederate flags isn't because they still support slavery and such, a lot of them just like other aspects of the south it has nothing to do with disrespect, of coarse there is historical aspects to it, but there were also good things that people respect that came from the south. Same thing goes for swastika, Hitler basically "stole" the symbol from East Indians, which for them it means being fortunate (good will), so people automatically start judging indians when they see them have swastika items on them, it's all because of ignorance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the rebel flag has nothing to do with slavery and some people need to understand that. it stands for how you were raised and it also means that you stand up for what you think is right, just like the south in the civil war. everytime someone says something about my rebel flag belt buckle, I say "heritage not hate"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So of all the symbols you could use to show standing up for what's right, you choose to use one used by people who though "what's right" is slavery?
