how do i find the vertex of x^2-8x+7

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

In this form, the easiest way to find the vertex is to use the formula x=-b/2a. This will give you the x coordinate.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

The a and b come from ax^2+bx+c

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

So, a=1, b=-8, c=7

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

So, the x-coordinate is -8/2 or -4.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Then, plug -4 in for x in the function to find the y-coordinate.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so. thanks again :)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

No worries :)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Can you tell me what you get for y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

(-4)^2 is 16 -8(-4) is 32 +7 16+32+7=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep you're right i had to look at it again

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

No worries, happy studies :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha thanks
