OpenStudy (joftheworld):

solve this system of linear equations. Separate the x- and y-values with a comma. 6x + 20y = -62 3x - 9y = -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you familiar with substitution and elimination?

OpenStudy (joftheworld):

yes, but this one confuses me because they're all different x and y values..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright lets find x first pick a equation to find x in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets do the second one cuz it's a bit easier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x-9(0)=-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you solve that for me?

OpenStudy (joftheworld):

x=-4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes do you understand where the 0 came from

OpenStudy (joftheworld):

no I was wondering about that..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whenever we do substitution we substitute whatever value we want to find in this case x we would substitute 0 in for y if we were finding y we would substitute 0 in for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we take x=-4 and substitute that into an equation

OpenStudy (joftheworld):

-12 - 9y = -12 ?
