help me ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tejasvir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it is decreases the steepness

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

let us not say I think, and let us approach this mathematically as well as analytically

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

x - 2y = 4 let us try converting this standard form into slope-intercept form that is Ax+By = C into y = mx + b

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

meaning solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk how :( I think the ''dumb blonde'' thing goes really well with me lol

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

yeah? most blondes I know are smart

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you know how to solve for y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nooo O';

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its an inverse relationship.. so it probably is decreases

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you solve for y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i got C too :3

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

Ax + By = C REMEMBER that A, B and C are coefficients (do you know what coefficients are) isolate y by first subtracting Ax to both sides Ax - Ax + By = C - Ax becomes By = C - Ax then divide both sides by B (By)/B = (C - Ax)/B becomes y = (C - Ax)/B or y = -Ax/B + C/B where A/B is your slope and that determines whether it is increasing, decreasing, zero or undefined.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it D or C =.=

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

let me give you a more concrete example in the standard form 2x - 5y = 10 identify whether it is increasing or decreasing with the standard form Ax + By = C the coefficients are: A = 2 B = -5 C = 10 like I said earlier let us solve for y to convert the equation into SLOPE-INTERCEPT form 2x - 5y = 10 subtract 2x on both sides 2x - 2x - 5y = 10 - 2x becomes -5y = 10 - 2x then divide -5 on both sides -5y/-5 = (10-2x)/-5 becomes y = 10/-5 -2x/-5 simplifies into: y = -2 + 2x/5 or in the format of y = mx+b y = 2x/5 - 2 slope is the coefficient with x, that is the m value = 2/5 it is positive so it is INCREASING

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMFG THANKS SM SO ITS D?!

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I don't know you have to solve your own problem, I just gave you a different example with the SAME concept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait if you solve for y you get (c-ax)/b = y isnt that an inverse relationship?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you know what an inverse relationship is @tejasvir ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea... as one increases the other decreases..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like y = 1/x --> if you increase the x the y decreases if you decrease the x the y increases

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wrongggggggggg omfg it was B

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so what increased in what decreased in that problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you increase the b... the y decreases and if you decrease the b the y increases

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so answer b would make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yeah i submitted and they said it was B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk youre probably right @nincompoop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was thinking of it in a different way. i guess that was wrong

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

@tejasvir you are looking at this problem incorrectly http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/directly-inversely-proportional.html

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

the way to answer this problem is to solve for y, that is converting the standard form of linear equation into slope-intercept form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. sorry.
