WILL GIVE MEDAL AND FAN!!! Graph the first six terms of a sequence where a1 = 3 and d = -10.

OpenStudy (bibby):

This is a geometric sequence where each term is multiplied by -10 if a1 = 3, what is a2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-0.6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-6*?

OpenStudy (bibby):

if d = -10 the sequence looks like:\[a_1 = 3 | a_2 = 3*-10\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a2 would =-30?

OpenStudy (bibby):

mhm. what would a3 be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a3=-30*-10? so 300?

OpenStudy (bibby):

correct. only 3 more terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a4=-3,000?

OpenStudy (bibby):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and a5=30,000?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and a6=-300,000?

OpenStudy (bibby):

Correct. Apparently you have to graph it though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i don't know how to do that.

OpenStudy (bibby):

make the x scale go by 1s and the y by 100,000s

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

"d" is usually used to denote the "common difference" in an arithmetic sequence "r" is used as the "common ratio" in a geometric sequence so I would guess that they mean arithmetic sequence here

OpenStudy (bibby):

Oh my, how embarassing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what?

OpenStudy (bibby):

It's an arithmetic sequence not a geometric sequence

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

@bibby - np - we all make mistakes - thats what makes us human :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so does that mean for every point starting at 1,-10 the graph will go down 10 ex: 2,-20 3,-30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 1,-7 2,-27 3,-37 and so on?

OpenStudy (bibby):

Correct. Straight down 10 units just that we start at 3 so 3 -13 -23 -33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont you mean 1,3 2,-7 3,-17 4,-27?

OpenStudy (bibby):

Wow, I must be tired. I can't do basic math anymore :/

OpenStudy (bibby):

you're right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay!!! thank you both for your help!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you help me with another one?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yw :) you should post each question separately - it helps other users as well to have each question dealt with on its own

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay
