Compare the following functions: Which function has the smallest minimum?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Looks like f(x) to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (radar):

It appears that when x=(3 pi)/4 that f(x) would equal -3

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

attachment isn't working for me, but I see surely that radar got this.

OpenStudy (radar):

It is a sin function and would repeat each period but the other function shown on the table do not reach a more negative value than the f(x).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is F(x)?

OpenStudy (radar):

It is the term "smallest minimum" that is confusing me, if they want the function that reaches a value more negative than the other functions shown, then f(x) is the one. It is worded in a strange way. I guess it could mean to look for the less minimum.......do you see my dilemma ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My online school doesn't word questions well sorry

OpenStudy (radar):

@SolomonZelman The attachment has the following data. It reveal three functions in different formats. The f(x)= -5 Sin (2x - pi) +2 The g(x) is a parabola that opens upward and vertex is at (3, -2) and h(x) is a table where x has values ranging from -2 to 4 and y never going negative the smallest value of y is a +3 with x = to 1.

OpenStudy (radar):

Don't know if that clarifies it for you, but my problem is semantics.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I can't see the graph well, but I zoomed in with CTRL and PLUS, and I see a parabola centered just a bit below the 1st quadrant.

OpenStudy (radar):

Yes with the vertex at a y=-2. English is my native language, but I really don't understand for sure what they are asking when the say the "smallest minimum" lol

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Each function has a minimum, and the minimum of which function is the smallest? this is the question.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Btw - English is my 3rd language.

OpenStudy (radar):

That is what I thought they were getting at, and believe the f(x) is the correct solution as the minimum would reach -3 periodically (it is a Sine function)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes...

OpenStudy (radar):

Thanks for your input, for a 3rd language, it would appear you have an excellent grasp of English.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

perhaps. I thought of my SAT but didn't want to type anything about it. I am in US for about 6 years, so I thinking I am not so bad at English. hopefully, I'll get better. tnx and good luck !
