Choose one 19th century American poem or short story and one historical document Write to compare the ways in which each of these represents the changing popular idea of democracy from the time period in which it was written. Cite specific evidence from the literature to support your ideas. "The Story of an Hour" (1894) by Kate Chopin's (short story) "How to Tell a Story" (1835-1910) by Mark Twain (short story) "The Raven" (1845) by Edgar Allan Poe (poem) "Ain't I a Woman" (1851) by Sojourner Truth (historical document)

Ok, so literature isn't my strongest area, but I should probably read the two writings first :P. So what you want to use when doing these kinds of assignments is format called C-E-R. The C stands for your claim, which is, in this assignment, stating that each of the pieces represents the changing popular idea of democracy from the time period(s) they were written in. So for the claim you would say something along the lines of; Both the historical document "Ain't I a Woman"(1851), by Sojourner Truth, and the short story "The Story of an Hour"(1894), by Kate Chopin, represent the changing popular idea of democracy from the time periods they were written in.

Now for the "E", which is your evidence. Evidence is basically the information that supports your claim. Your evidence has to first start with one of the pieces of writing (whichever you choose), and the first way how it represents the changing popular idea of democracy from the time period it was written in. Next comes the "R", which stands for reasoning. Your reasoning stands for how your evidence relates to the claim. Yes, I know this is tedious, but it's all apart of writing. A bad example of reasoning would be: This piece of evidence supports my claim, making my reasoning valid. This is because the reasoning doesn't state **How** the evidence supports the claim. ****For each piece of writing, you will need at least three pieces of evidence and reasoning. When this is done, you will need to switch to the second piece of writing and repeat the process.

Therefore, the overall format of the writing would have to be in: C- E- R- E- R- E- R E - R - E - R - E - R.

Hope that helped!! If you give me your claim, evidences, and reasoning's, I can help you put them all together if you want. :)
