If cos Θ = -2/5 and tan Θ > 0, what is the value of sin Θ? would it be negative square root of 21 over 5, or would it be the positive square root of 21 over 5? Medal given!!

OpenStudy (crashonce):

cos = adj/hyp

OpenStudy (crashonce):

so -2 would have to be 2 if tan value was more lthan 0

OpenStudy (crashonce):

so it should be positive root 21 / 5

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Woops. I think you've got that mixed up crash :o Tangent is positive cosine is negative So we're in quadrant 3. We should end up with a negative value for our sine.

OpenStudy (crashonce):

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowops sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\tan(x) = \frac{\sin(x)}{\cos(x)}\] For tan(x) > 0, if cos(x) is negative, then sin(x) has to be negative, so that negative will cancel other negative and make tan(x) positive.. :)
