The graph shows the amount of time that Dewayne spent on a practice exam based on the number of questions he completed. What is the function rule? How much time will he spend if the actual exam has twenty questions? A graph shows number of questions along the x-axis and total time in minutes along the y-axis. The graph of the ordered pairs two comma ten, four comma twenty, and six comma thirty

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

do you have to write the function rule as something like f(x) = mx + b ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont have a function rule i am just starting geometry I am not that great :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. y equals x divided by two; one hundred minutes b. y equals five times x; four hundred minutes c. y equals x divided by five; four hundred minutes d. y equals five times x; one hundred minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my options..:P

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

ohhh so y = mx + b where m = slope and b= y-intercept do you know what slope is? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no o:

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

slope is the rise over run :) rise --- run like how much does the graph go up when you move to the right 1 unit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh..ok

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so looking at the graph, can you tell me you think the slope is? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2,10)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

not quite :) it goes up 10 when it goes to the right 2 so rise = 10 and run = 2 so rise/run = 10/2 = slope so slope = 5 do you see that? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhh okay I see now.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

good :) so in the equation I showed before, y = mx + b where m = slope we now know that slope = 5 so we can replace m with 5 so y = 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so d?? o:

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

correct
