How does HTML work?

OpenStudy (bibby):

It's a markup that gets interpreted?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

To add some to what bibby said: Lets say I give you a rule that whenever I say the word red, you paint things red. When I say the word blue, you paint things blue. Pretty simple rules. Well, HTML is the same sort of things. It is a list of rules, or a standard, that describe how a computer (browser) is supposed to mark up (color, size, position, etc.) things as it builds a web page. So the computer sees everything, the text and the rules, but what it shows you is the text, images, etc. as defined by the rules.
