Check the weather forecast! You'll need a sunny day. The best time to see shadows is when the sun is not directly overhead. These times are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Collect materials. You'll need A pencil Your data sheet A tape measure You'll also need a family member or a friend to measure your shadow while you stand still. Choose a tall object. Find something of interest around your house or neighborhood that is too tall to measure directly. (Suggestions: flagpole, basketball goal, 2 story building, etc.) Collect data. Measure and record your height, the length of your shadow, and the length of the object's shadow. Be sure to include the unit of measure in all of your work. You may use whatever units you wish, as long as you're consistent. Record your data on the data sheet. You will need this information to complete the calculations and write your essay. Solve the problem. Use the properties of similar triangles and what you know about proportions to determine the height of the chosen object. Report on the process. As you measure, fill in the data on the Data, Questions and Report Sheet form. Use this data to calculate the height of your object, answer the questions, and write your final report. Check off items in the Report section of the Data Questions and Report Sheet as you complete them.
