Alliteration Assonance Consonance Onomatopoeia

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jgirl128

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused by thiss...

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

alliteration is the use of the same letter/sound at the beginning of connected words assonance is the repetition of the sound of a vowel in stressed syllables close enough to each other for an echo to be distinguishable (an example is: "hear the mellow wedding bells" or "try to light the fire" or "the crumbling thunder of seas" consonance is the compatibility between opinions or actions (an example is: blank and think, spelled and scald, far and jar, borrow and sorrow, slithe and slather, etc) onomatopoeia is a sound that spelt out in a word (example: meow, sizzle, pop)

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I don't think it's A or D.

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

slither*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea it's definitley not those...

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I think it may be assonance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same....

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

because it says "at the end of each line" so it'd be the words: man, hand, age, states

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mhm!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This dust was once the man, Gentle, plain, just and resolute, under whose cautious hand, Against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age, Was saved the Union of these States Walt Whitman What is the "foulest crime in history"? Creation of United States Election of Pres. Lincoln Civil War or slavery Death or warfare

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this...B?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

the poem was dedicated to Abraham Lincoln when it was originally written so I'd say it's C

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

because Lincoln was "against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh!!

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

and I'm sure you know about Lincoln and slavery and the Civil War

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, i juist misread and thought it was asking who it was about..

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

it's no problem :) just glad you understand now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea! same! ty oxox

OpenStudy (anonymous):

his dust was once the man, Gentle, plain, just and resolute, under whose cautious hand, Against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age, Was saved the Union of these States Walt Whitman What can you interpret from the title and first line of the poem? Whitman wrote it to be his own death announcement. Whitman wrote it years after the death of Lincoln. Whitman believes no one remembers his work. Whitman believes no one remembers Lincoln.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first line is "this dust was once the man" and btw the title is "this dust was once the man"

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I don't think it's B because Whitman wrote the poem shortly after Lincolns death

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

it's definitely not A because that doesn't really make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, A and B dont match

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....i feel like C & D are like sort of smiliar, but maybe its D?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

they're similar but totally different at the same time. do you think Whitman thinks that Lincoln himself won't be remembered or Lincolns work won't be remembered?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually, i think that it may be C.. and sorry i pressed a button and it did that lol

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I think it's D. because we're not talking about the entire poem, we're talking about the first line of poem/the title of the poem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.....true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so yea. that makes more sense for it to be D

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

get it now? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess:)

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This dust was once the man, Gentle, plain, just and resolute, under whose cautious hand, Against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age, Was saved the Union of these States Walt Whitman What is the word just most likely an allusion to? Lincoln's career as a lawyer Lincoln's death at war's end Whitman's war reporting Whitman's poem writing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only one left...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....would it be B?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

what word?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

......the word just

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

oops, sorry. I thought it was just apart of the sentence bc it didn't have quotations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol its okayy :P

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

allusion means indirect reference and just can mean behaving according to what is morally right and fair

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I think it's A

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

....oh ok:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

last oone!!!

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

congrats :) hope you get a better grade! sorry for yesterday

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This dust was once the man, Gentle, plain, just and resolute, under whose cautious hand, Against the foulest crime in history known in any land or age, Was saved the Union of these States Walt Whitman Who is "the man" the dust now represents? The narrator A criminal Whitman Lincoln

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lincoln?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and stahhhp saying sorry its fine

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I don't think it's A or B. and since it's dedicated to Lincoln, I'd say it's D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
