OpenStudy (sidsiddhartha):

hey! i'm from india and i've observed that in my country rated voltage is 230 volt (phase voltage =415 v) and frequency is 50 hz but in other countries frequency is 60 hz and rated voltage is 110 v. what is the reason of this difference ?

OpenStudy (kenljw):

Not sure, U.S. is single phase 120, 60 Hz while Europe is 240, 50 Hz, your country seems to have European influence. There appears to many differences like the side of driver in a vehicle, U.S. left, England right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi there! There are reasons for opting for each frequency and voltage. For one, higher voltage results in lower power loss during transmission. On the other hand higher frequency for example means smaller transformers. It's up to the country to choose which setting fits it. But worldwide there's more tendency towards 220V, 50 Hz. Hope that helps

OpenStudy (kenljw):

The actual choice today is not that simple. Wire experience losses according to frequency, its known as skin effect, the higher the frequency the greater the loss. There are some long distance transmission lines today that actual transmit Direct Current, DC, to minimize losses. Another method used to minimizes losses is to use high voltage Alternating Current, AC, between 33 and 120 KV along the line, With either of these cases at the end point it's transformed to the more common business and household use. As to the question of why there's two different household standards across the world I would say's its an economic reason, someone always want to control the market. There may be an human biological effect that really wasn't consider at the time, the human heart has a natural pace maker and without it drops to about 30 beats per minute, it would be an interesting test to measure mean beats per minute between country's with different frequencies. Some consider these high voltage lines EM transmission might be carcinogen in nature, especially about he higher voltage lines. I've noticed recently that in some county's the wedding ring is worn on the right hand, in the US it's generally the left ring finger.
