Please help

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

\[\sqrt{3}+1=-4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

\[\sqrt{3}=-5\]

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

Now what?

OpenStudy (nubeer):

what you have to do with it?

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

Simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the square root of three is not equal to minus five

OpenStudy (nubeer):

and dont think squaring any number would give u a negative result

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

Oh wait my bad \[\sqrt{3x}=-5\]

OpenStudy (nubeer):

makes more sensse now... square both sides..

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

3x=25

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

x=25/3

OpenStudy (nubeer):

yup..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

What it it then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the square root symbol means the positive root

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for example \(\sqrt{36}=6\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is not possible for the left hand side of your equation to be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in other words you cannot solve \(\sqrt{3x}=-5\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so don't begin don't square anything don't do anything at all just say no

OpenStudy (nubeer):

hmmm as far as i remember x^2 = 36 taking square root gives us one negative and one positive root .. doesn't it?

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

I can't say no

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

Guateber... It was right 25/3 thanks nubeer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

I don't know

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

It just said it was right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(\sqrt{25}=5,-\sqrt{25}=-5\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol really? on line math = scam

OpenStudy (nubeer):

lol

OpenStudy (nubeer):

maybe just thinking too deeply :P

OpenStudy (danielbarriosr1):

This things are driving me crazy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am sure 25 has two square roots, \(5\) and \(-5\) the symbol \(\sqrt{25}\) means the positive root, namely \(5\)
