ok you have that "y is 5x +1" in the second equation. Since that is what y is, you can sub in 5x+1 for the y in the first equation, ending up with this: 2x-3(5x+1)=-16.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

The point of that is that you have an equation now only in terms of x instead of in x and y. So solve that equation, the 2x-3(5x+1)=-16 for x. What do you get when you do that?
