Statistics Question?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it better be an easy one ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can someone explain the difference between qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete and quantitative/continuous? Please list some examples of each.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

not sure what the '/' parts convey

OpenStudy (amistre64):

qualitative/ordinal qualitative/nominal quantitative/discrete quantitative/continuous

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That the way they list it in my lessons. Just remove the / and try to explain it the best you can.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

something has a quality of being first, second, fifth; or a quality of being better or worse a quantity is something that can be counted or measured in some mathical way

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ordinal is ordered; first to last nominal is named: best better bestest discrete is counted: 1,2,3,4,5,.... continuous is measured: 5.2 grams, 7.35 pounds, 62 Hz

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

qualitative is a measure ot types.... eyes, hair, car type quantitative is things that are counted on measured, how many children in the family, height, weight ok.... ordinal means data can be ordered or ranked .... house numbers.... smallest to largest, candidates on a ballot paper. nominal when you can label data such as eye colour or car colour discrete, data that can be counted how many pets, how many live in the house continuous things that are measured, height, weight, (continuious because you can never get a truely accurate measure, due to errors in measurement) hope it helps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They listed some things and I'm suppose to classify under qualitative, quantitative etc... Theses are the things the listed political party eye color height of giraffe gender mileage indicated on the digital odometer of a car I think eye color is qualitative nominal, but I'm not about the rest. Can one of you guys help me with it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm thinking political party is ordinal eye color nominal height of giraffe continuous gender discrete mileage is continuous Am I correct can someone verify for me?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well I would have thought gender was nominal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure, you might be right. what about the others?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

I would have thought political party is nominal... you nominate which party

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Political party: hmm, not sure, it could be context-dependent. For example, ordinal could be describing the ratio of liberal to conservative (i.e. "there are more Republicans than there are Democrats"), or it could be nominal if you just list the parties (i.e. "there is a Republican party and a Democratic party"). Eye color: yes Giraffe height: yes Gender: also context-dependent. If you're counting the number of boys/girls, then it's discrete, but if you're just attributing "male" or "female" to a subject, it's nominal. Mileage: yes

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the rest are ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SithsAndGiggles that's the thing all it says is gender, or political party it doesn't give any more detail of what the data is about.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd have to agree with campbell_st in that case, if you're not given the specifics. Nominal for both of the ambiguous ones.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you think I should go for political party is nominal eye color nominal height of giraffe continuous gender nominal mileage is continuous
